Goede Morgen van de Netherlands

We flew in to Schipol airport yesterday morning just before the sun came up.  The lights of the city and the greenhouses stretched for miles all sparkling in the dark.  After a long taxi from the runway to the terminal and an even longer wait for our bags we cleared customs and met Mum's delightful cousin Marrianne and her husband Joss.  We marvelled at all the canals and big old windmills (still in use) on the drive to their house.

They live in a lovely mid-century apartment and all the furniture looks like it landed out of a design magazine.  After a cup of coffee we went for a walk to the local shopping centre and were suitably cautious crossing the road with all the bicycles and cars on the wrong side.  We touristed around the shops remarking on all the things that are different here.  The prices of the Aadvocaat  2.99 Euros instead of $22.00 at home :-)  and the delightful florist that is just part of the every day shops,  and the amazing cheese section in the supermarket.

After lunch we went for a drive in the country.  Joss navigated along the most narrow of oneway roads that sat on top of the polders, waving and negotiating our way around the oncoming traffic.  Somehow his car still has it's wingmirrors ?!?  It was stunningly beautiful.  The old houses had lovely gardens and then little canals between each of them.  Some of them drove over a little bridge to get to their front door.  Unfortunately there was no where to stop so I have no photos.  We did stop at a little village for a walk around the cobbled streets and old brick buildings but by this time we were a bit tired.
