Miscellaneous May

Since we are too cheap to buy our kids pets we've just been picking up wild animals from the side of the road :-)   Actually Bunker the Rabbit was Phil's find from the golf course just before Christmas.  He's grown up into a very friendly and engaging pet, he always comes running to see you and then scoots off to nibble the vege garden if he's not in his cage.  He really enjoys a nice scratch behind the ears, and he's keen to give you a good lick in return.

Kahu the hawk we picked up off the side of the road on our way home from hockey practice.  We think it might have been clipped by a car.  It has no sign of any injury but appears to be suffering from concussion.  Phil took it to the bird rescue centre yesterday morning and if it recovers they'll call us in a week or two to come collect it and release it back to where I found it.  We were all pretty amazed to be able to hold and examine what is normally a hard bird to get close to, it is incredibly light for the size of it, and it's wingspan was huge.  It certainly freaked out the dog having a hawk in a cardboard box next to the living room fire for the night:-)
