Notre Dame and Versaille

Another beautiful day in Paris.  This morning we went to the cathedral at Notredame.  The stained glass windows were really stunning and the atmosphere in the church was quite special despite all the tourists.  It seems extraordinary that the "Church" could raise so much money to build such an amazing building.

After a wander around the streets of the Ile de Cite and a delightful stop at a local market we caught the RER train to Versailles.  The gardens were just as lovely as the guide books promised but all the fountains were turned off and the statues were all covered in canvas - we have no idea why.

Since we were there we thought we ought to have a nosy around the palace.  It was astonishing!  For the first few rooms we were soaking in all the details and admiring every painting but by the end our eyes were hanging out on stalks from all the gold and mirrors etc etc.  How anyone could live there is beyond us but it was lovely for a visit.

Tonight was our last in Paris so we went out for dinner at our favourite Chez Papa and then returned to our room to try and pack all our purchases into our suitcases before we leave for Rome tomorrow.  Both of us are a little sad to leave Paris, we've had a wonderful time, but we are looking forward to Rome as well.
